Assignment #11: Retelling Light
This assignment was an interesting one. We were supposed to find any image (photo/painting/drawing etc.) in which we liked the light and allow that to inspire us to recreate the light in studio, capturing the subject of our choice. I flipped through random photos on flickr and just picked whatever photo I thought had interesting light. The first photo below is NOT my picture, but it is the picture I found on flickr which was supposed to “inspire” me. I liked the photo because I liked the warm colors, reflection of the water, and the soft feeling from the fog. The 2nd picture below is the one I did take trying to emulate that light.
Comments?
Again, this first photo is NOT mine, but thanks to ouldm01 on Flickr for taking the photo and giving me some inspiration for my shot. They have a lot of other great landscape/nature photos on their flickr if you’d like to see more:
This is my reinterpretation of light from that photo, created with studio lighting:

I like the lighting, bokeh. I think it’d look better if you didn’t cut off the relection on the table, and maybe if there was less relection off of the watch glass (maybe use a polarizing filter, or angle the watch differently). Anyway, looks like it’d be a sweet advertisement for a watch.
Regardless, i dig the photo.
Thanks for the comment Justin. I just looked at your wordpress. Didn’t realize you had one! Nice!
I tried to light the watch without a diffuser but the metal on the watch was too reflective and i didn’t like the specular highlights. I don’t think it’s something a polarized filter would take care of either. I guess I could’ve re-angled the lighting and the watch, but i liked the way it was positioned.
The watch is sick and legit. Keep it up.
